Without it, you will see the number of site visitors drop off gradually. This is a fact. Many search engines rank sites based on how frequently they are updated, which should be a reflection of how current the information is. This may not be the case with your site, but it is something that you have to be aware of, and working round this problem is done by constantly updating the site, combined with regularly re-submissions to the search engines.
