General
I have a number of banner ads on my site and wish to know how many times the banners have been clicked. How is this done?
There are two ways of settings up banner ads. Firstly, they can be simple .gif or .jpg files, that when clicked, go straight to the advertiser's site (i.e. the URL on the banner ad is a simple .com-type). This will not generate a statistic on your webserver's logfile because the link on the banner ad is on a different webserver altogether. The other method is to setup the banner ads to be 'bounced' off a file on your own webserver. This file usually comes in the form of a .cgi or .raw file (on unix/mac respectively), so when users click on a banner ad, it gets recorded as visiting a file on YOUR webserver before redirecting it to the target server. All you need to do then, when setting up Funnel Web, is to include a filter that only analyses the file which bounces your banner ads. All graphs and statistics generated will reflect your banner ad effectiveness.
I'm running Funnel Web Lite and my reports only show the first 50,000 hits. What is the problem?
Funnel Web Lite is a free version designed for low-traffic and noncommercial web sites. If you are getting more than 50,000 hits in your log period then you should get Funnel Web Standard or Professional, downloadable from the web site.
I turn on Client History, but when I process the log it appears to get turned off.
You have streaming analysis turned on. Client History is disabled when streaming is on, this is a compromise as Client History requires large amounts of memory and streaming allows you to process larger logs files with limited RAM.
Is there a printed manual, or a printable form of the manual?
Not at present. The next major release will include a printed manual, and be available in a printable electronic format also.
When I apply a filter to my reports the graphs do not seem to change to reflect these new filters.
Most browsers cache all graphics to assist in download speed across the net. To make sure you are viewing the latest graphs produced by Funnel Web you must do a force reload, or refresh on the page you are viewing.
The shadows around each graph seem to be broken in each of my reports.
Funnel Web checks for the existence of the shadow images before writing them so if the images were already damaged from a prior run they will not be overwritten until they are deleted. To fix this
make sure you clear the output directory first and then rerun the reports.
I am using WebTen and trying to breakout each top level directory into a separate folder using the "Multiple Reports: Use Directory" and Directories mapping window and it doesn't work.
When mapping the top level directories you must specify the directory carefully since it expects to see a directory name, rather than the domain name presented in WebTen. Therefore specify the directory preceded by a "/" such as: /www.mydomain.com As of 3.6 you can also ignore the port specification if it is present. Then select the output directory you require.
Windows
Macintosh
My log files don't appear in the open file dialog, even though they are in the correct folder.
It is possible that your web server is saving your files in a format other than a generic text file. Try opening them in a text editor and re-saving them as text (even a word processor will do as long as you make sure you save as text). Another approach may be to use a utility to change the file and creator types to "TEXT" and "ttxt" respectively. Drag and drop applications are available to automate this if you need to do this on a regular basis.
When I select an output directory for the report nothing happens?
Funnel Web uses Apple's new navigation services in MacOS 8 and above to assist in file open and saving. There is a known bug in Navigation services that requires you delete the Navigation Services preferences file in the System:Preferences folder. This only appears when the preferences file grows very large. This problem appears to be solved under MacOS 9.
Funnel Web keeps failing to download the log file from my remote server. It seems to work fine under version 3.0 though.
As of version 3.5 Funnel Web added a new download location option to specify the destination of the downloads. If this is not set manually in 3.5.x, Funnel Web does not know where to put the file and fails to download. This has been fixed in version 3.6 and above.
Unix
When I try and register the program at the command line the program still remains locked in demo mode.
To register the program with a serial number requires the user to be logged in as "root" in order to have enough privileges to modify the program.
When I try to decompress the .tgz archive I get an error message.
Make sure the version of Unix you are running has a recent version of TAR to allow you to decompress in one step.
