The search engines generally cache a copy of your site - if it is the same the next time they visit, you're not rated as highly as one that is continually changing - even if those changes are minor!  That's because search engines want to show relevant and up-to-date information to their visitors (if they don't, the browsing public won't use them!) - so your site must remain "fresh" - or you start to stink up the place!!
